Hey Parents! This month’s Ask an Agent question is such an important one — and honestly, one I wish more families slowed down and thought through carefully: How do I know if I’m signing with the right Agent for my child?

I get it. When an Agent says “yes,” it’s exciting. After all the work, submissions, and waiting, it can feel like you’ve finally “made it.” But here’s the truth:

Not every Agent is the right Agent for your child.

And signing with the wrong fit can sometimes create more stress than support.

Here are a few things I always encourage parents to look for:

✅ They genuinely seem excited about your child. You want an Agent who gets your child — not just someone filling a roster spot. Pay attention to how they talk about your child and the kinds of opportunities they see for them.

✅ Their roster makes sense. Do they already represent kids similar to yours? Are those kids working? This matters. You want someone who understands your child’s type and knows where they fit in the market.

✅ Communication feels respectful and professional. You don’t need constant communication — but you do want clarity, kindness, and professionalism. Trust your gut here. If something feels chaotic or dismissive during the signing process, don’t ignore it.

✅ They’re honest — not salesy. A good Agent will be realistic. Be careful of anyone promising fame, huge careers overnight, or making you feel pressured to sign immediately. Real reps know this business is a marathon, not a sprint.

✅ You understand the expectations. Before signing, make sure you understand how they submit, communicate, and what they expect from you as a parent. The strongest Agent relationships happen when everyone understands their role.

✅ Your child feels comfortable too. This matters more than parents realize. Your child should feel safe, supported, and seen — especially if they’re older and more involved in meetings and auditions.

And here’s the part I really want you to remember:

You do not need to say yes out of fear.

So many parents worry this may be their “only chance.” But the right representation relationship should feel aligned — not rushed, pressured, or confusing.

A great Agent can absolutely help open doors. But the best partnerships are built on trust, communication, preparation, and shared goals.

And remember — Agents want your child to work. They only get paid when your child books. So finding a rep who truly believes in your child and wants to build something long-term makes all the difference.

Take your time. Ask questions. Trust your instincts.
