How Do I Figure Out My Child’s “Type” Without Guessing?

Hey Parents! This month’s Ask an Agent question is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle when it comes to marketing your child: How do I figure out my child’s type?

And first — let me clear something up: “Type” is not about putting your child in a box. It’s about understanding how Casting naturally sees them right now. Your child’s type will evolve as they grow. But when you understand it, everything becomes easier — headshots, submissions, auditions, even finding the right Agent.

Here are a few ways to start identifying it:

✅ Look at what roles they naturally fit. When people meet your child, what energy do they give off? Are they the sweet best friend? The quirky kid next door? The confident leader? The funny class clown? Casting notices these things instantly.

✅ Pay attention to what they actually book. This is huge. Sometimes parents want their child to be seen one way, but Casting consistently responds to something else. The market will often tell you where your child fits best.

✅ Don’t fight what’s working. If your child keeps getting called in for similar roles, there’s usually a reason. That doesn’t mean they lack range — it means Casting clearly understands where to place them.

✅ Their type is more than appearance. It’s personality, energy, essence, and emotional vibe. Two kids can look similar and have completely different types because of how they come across on camera.

✅ Ask industry professionals you trust. A good Agent, Manager, coach, or industry pro can often spot your child’s type very quickly because they understand the marketplace. Sometimes it’s hard to see clearly when you’re the parent.

And here’s something I really want parents to hear:

Type is a marketing tool — not your child’s identity.

Your child is a whole human being with layers, depth, and range. But in this industry, clarity helps Casting know where they fit today. And that clarity creates opportunities. The kids who work consistently are often the ones whose branding is clear and easy to understand.

And remember — as your child grows, their type will grow too.

I actually created a workbook called The Actor’s Journey to help young actors explore this for themselves in a fun, positive way. It’s designed to help them better understand their strengths, energy, and where they naturally fit in the market — while building confidence along the way.
