Holiday Slowdowns in the Industry: Why It’s Normal (and Okay!)
In today’s blog, Jenn Boyce halts the panic on any anxiety you may be having with missing auditions during the holiday season:
Hey Parents,
If you’re staring at your inbox wondering, “Where are all the auditions?” — take a deep breath. It’s not you, it’s the season.
Every December, the industry slows way down. TV shows go on hiatus, production pauses, and most Casting offices take time off. And when I say “time off,” I mean the day before the holiday, the holiday itself, and probably a few days after too. Showbiz loves a holiday — and we take them all.
Yes, every now and then, someone decides to cast a commercial on Christmas Eve or send a last-minute audition for New Year’s Day (usually commercials, not TV or film). So sure, you may still get the occasional tape — but for the most part? It’s quiet. And that’s normal.
So here’s my advice: don’t panic.
This is not the time to spiral, overthink, or call your Agent in early January saying, “Is everything okay? It’s been pretty slow…”
They’ll smile politely — and roll their eyes after they hang up.
Instead, enjoy the quiet.
Spend time with your family. Sleep in. Bake cookies. Watch movies that have nothing to do with acting. Let your child be a kid and give yourself permission to not hustle for a minute.
The business won’t really pick back up until mid-January — so even if you’re traveling for the holidays (or even for a booking!), make sure you take your self-tape gear with you. You never know when something might pop up — and being prepared is always a good look.
Oh — and one more thing: your reps are working for free until your child books. If you appreciate what they’ve done for you this year, a small thank-you goes a long way. A kind note, a treat, or just acknowledging their hard work is always remembered.
Auditions will return. Momentum will pick back up. And you’ll be so glad you rested while you could.
Happy Holidays!
