HOW DO I FIND AN AGENT?
Jenn Boyce breaks down one of the biggest questions she hears: "How do I find a reputable talent agent for my child?"
No one hands you a guidebook when your kid says, “I want to be an actor.” So here are some quick tips to help you find the right rep — without the overwhelm:
Start With Referrals You Trust
Talk to parents who’ve been at this for a while. A personal recommendation from someone with a signed, working child actor is gold. No shady Facebook group ads or DMs from random “scouts". Real agents don’t slide into your inbox asking for money.
Look for Franchised or Well-Known Agencies
In California, you can check with the California Labor Commission to see if an agent is licensed and bonded. You can also look up SAG-AFTRA franchised agencies. Reputable Talent Agents never ask for upfront fees, charge for photos, or make you use a specific photographer or class.
Your Child Must Be Ready
This one’s big: Agents are looking for ready-to-work kids. That means strong headshots, a solid resume, great self-tape skills, and ideally some training under their belt. If you’re not there yet, don’t rush it! A bad first impression is hard to undo.
Red Flag Alert
If someone guarantees bookings, promises fame, or pressures you to spend thousands up front—walk away. Representation is earned, not bought.
Finding the right Talent Agent is about preparation, not luck. When you and your child are truly ready, the right Agent will see it—and say yes.
