PUTTING YOUR KID IN ENTERTAINMENT: For the RIGHT Reasons
Nelson Paredez-Parks shows some tips on how to be a supportive (not overbearing) parent!
Getting your young performer involved in the entertainment industry can be a rewarding and memorable experience—when it’s done for the right reasons. Think of it like dance class, soccer, or Boy Scouts: it should be a fun after-school activity that can teach life skills, not a launchpad for fame.
Fame should never be the focus—it’s unpredictable. The goal should be growth, confidence, and having fun. If success follows, it’s a bonus!
A great talent manager can help guide the process, offering insight, protecting your kid or teen’s well-being, and help you avoid becoming “that” parent. Hollywood can be tricky to navigate, but with the right support, it can be a healthy, rewarding and exciting journey!
5 Tips to Be a Supportive (Not Overbearing) Parent:
1. Keep It Light
Auditions and classes should feel like play—low pressure, high encouragement and don’t compare your kids to others in the business.
2. Respect the Process
Learn the industry without trying to control it. Once you have carefully done your homework and chosen your team, trust your manager, agent, and acting coach and set realistic expectations.
3. Celebrate Effort, Not Just the Wins
Applaud your child for showing up, being brave, and putting in the work—not just for booking roles.
4. Maintain a Normal Life
Ensure your child still goes to school, hangs out with friends, and enjoys other hobbies outside of acting. Set healthy boundaries!
5. Be Their Safe Space
Hollywood can be full of “no’s.” Be the person who supports them unconditionally, regardless of what happens in the industry and don’t ask questions like “So do you think you are going book this job?”
At its best, entertainment should empower your young performer—do not pressure them to be bookers. Stay grounded, keep it fun, and let the journey unfold naturally!
