Time Management:The Key to Success For Your Child Actor
When your child dreams of being on screen, time becomes your best friend—and biggest challenge. Between auditions, rehearsals, classes, and the occasional booking, life moves fast. As a parent of a young performer, mastering time management ensures your child thrives—without burning out. Nelson Paredez-Parks gives you six essential tips to keep your family on track.
1. Create a Weekly Schedule Together:
Sit down at the start of the week and map out auditions, classes, school, and downtime. Making it visual helps your young performer take ownership of their time and see where rest fits in.
2. Prioritize Rest and Family Time:
Even the busiest young actor needs downtime. Block out family dinners or movie nights to stay grounded.
3. Use a Timer for Tasks:
For homework, script practice, or even screen time, set a timer. This encourages focus and teaches your young performer to work efficiently in chunks—just like on set. (For 2 years, I wore a stop watch around my neck and I learned how long it took me to do most tasks in life and learned to master my time.)
4. Plan Audition Prep in Advance:
If an audition is due Friday, plan practice time Monday through Thursday. Cramming doesn’t lead to confidence—steady preparation does.
5. Teach Them to Say No:
Not every opportunity will be the right one. Teaching your young performer to decline roles or commitments that don’t align with your values will help them avoid burnout and have them stay focused on the projects that matter.
6. Model Time Management Yourself:
Your young performer is watching. Show them how you balance commitments, plan ahead, and respect your own time. Lead by example, and you’ll raise a performer who respects time as their most precious asset.
