What Should I be Looking for in an Acting Class or Coach for my Child?
In today’s Industry Pro Series, Jenn Boyce answers one of the most important questions a parent has in this industry:
What should I be looking for in an acting class or coach for my child?
There are a million options out there, and let’s be honest—not all of them are worth your time or money. So here are some quick tips to help you choose wisely:
✅ Choose training over showcasing.
If a class leads with “Agents come to our showcases,” that’s a red flag. Focus on building real skills. A solid coach helps your child grow as an actor—not just chase exposure.
✅ Ask your Agent.
If you’re repped, always check in with your Agent first. They often know which coaches are respected and truly help their clients improve. If you don’t have representation yet, ask an industry pro (like me!) for guidance.
✅ Observe before you commit.
You should be able to sit in or audit a class. Watch how the teacher interacts with the kids. Are they engaged? Encouraging? Clear in their feedback? The vibe matters.
✅ Not every coach is the right fit.
If your child doesn’t feel comfortable or connected to the teacher, that’s a sign. Just because a coach has a great reputation doesn’t mean they’re right for your kid. It’s okay to explore until you find the best match.
✅ Look for coaches with working clients.
This doesn’t mean the class guarantees bookings—but if their students are consistently working, it’s a sign the training aligns with what the industry expects.
✅ Do your research.
Take your time and look into who’s teaching your child. The wrong class can waste time, money, and even hold your child back. A good coach will move them forward—not confuse or discourage them.
The right class should build your child’s skills and their confidence. Don’t rush the process—your child deserves training that meets them where they are and helps them grow.
